Ok season four.

Susie is a goddamn lesbian? I probably missed the subtle coding and jokes, but it's confirmed no kiss or hand holding, her one love, gone forever can never try another. Susie is the type who would have beaten them off with a stick and you can't even gives us a gay club or hangout.

Also I hated the ending. I hated how Midge got her break. I hate how it was dependent on her seizing the stage. I wish it had been some other way, playing at a club cause someone was sick. I dunno just felt cheap and rushed. Also hate how they made her so rich she could live in a literal castle. I dunno it feels like she was funny, but she was never legendary, and she probably committed financial fraud to get the money. It's like the show went from saying yeah girl power to ohhhh capitalism works if your rich. Or probably always said that.

Hate her kids ended up being not even interesting, just rich like her. I wish they had been struck off and raised their chosen family different and we get to see a clash. I feel she would've made it, invested well, wealth builds wealth, and kept her apartment worth a fortune in the 80s, decorated like she's always had it, including her dad's study. She's a comedy legend, digested to fund bunch of films.

I dont mind Susie being so powerful as to be honored at the friar club or being behind all the successful blockbusters or Dina running new york, good for her. I don't think she live in an island house. She was always about New York. She have a pent house with shitty coffee pot and trash and probably a ton of pigeons she raised. She probably travel well and eat well but at the end she wants to be left the fuck alone to enjoy her money.

She and midge meet up at the diner once a week order shame shitty coffee and food and no one bothers either of them.

Joel I stand by should have stayed corporate and last season he's shown as having done exactly as expected to golf now, retire and complain to turn off Midge old stand up.

Also the whole Joel arc was so spoiled in Miss Maisel. The ending feels cheap after season 1 low blow where the stakes stood at the time. Joel morphs into a love interest instead of an antagonist, and then not even an interesting foil. He is trying to define himself but we never dig deeper into what he wants, and there's plenty to want and Mad Men shows you can make a show about a guys fragile ego.

It would have been interesting to see Joel as the kind of world we don't see with Midge, day drinking, and corporate politics, get more of where we are in the world events to help set the stage between whatever club Midge is playing in, a real draw out to see what Midge and other characters are playing against day to day with experience and expectations.

Also maybe more Imogen life outside her friendship with Midge through Archie's friendship, which seems to be a rare cross for the pair of them. The show never ventured really close to show religion politics or anything big deal for world events. I dunno I think I take that over giving Joel's parents a sitcom arc over the next two seasons and Joel showing he can be a raging sexist in many industries.

Season four of the show really went off into sitcoms, midge can solve complex problems, prove women comedians are funny you guys and Joel became the money laundering criminal with a record. Susie got off Scott free and retired with more money than Jeff bezos but that's another rant .

Ok so Some Thoughts™️ in random order, under the tag for spoilers

The flash forwards

I find it kinda funny that a lot of people have been clamoring about how Midge is a terrible mother only to now complain about her kids not liking her lol personally I don’t think Midge is a bad mother as much as she’s a mother of her time, but then again… there’s plenty of gen Xers who have the same exact relationship to their mothers, so to me that’s fairly realistic — although realism is not why I watch this show, so it feels very tonally different so far.

The kids

I LOVE that Esther has so much of her mother’s mannerisms but all of Abe and Noah’s professional/academic inclinations - and conversely, how Ethan has Noah’s calm personality but completely different inclinations (I wonder if it comes from Joel’s side of the family and his closeness to his paternal grandparents? The Weissmans are not as devout as the Maisels — or maybe Ethan spent a lot of time with Noah and Astrid?)

I don’t know whether we had a spoiler for it and I forgot about it or whether it was in a fic and I also forgot about it, but it made sense somehow to see Ethan in Israel studying to become a rabbi; I can’t explain it but I watched and thought, “ah, of course”. I liked it.

It’s really sad to see them this kind of relationship with Midge honestly, I hope the flash forwards do advance the future plot as well and we get some kind of resolution between them.

What We Got Right

@alixinwwonderland !!!! I positively SQUEALED out loud when I saw the scene about the clothes auction, you absolute genius called a focus on Midge’s clothes MONTHS ago and it filled me with so much joy to see it onscreen. It brought up very fond memories of your fic, it was amazing 🥹

Also I absolutely loved how similar the show’s storyline about Midge getting hypothermia reminded me of @wonderlandleighleigh ‘s Midge getting injured in Fashionable People. It serves a purpose as a reckoning moment for Midge to reassess her life and take in Lenny’s words, and I very much liked it both in the fic and in the show.

I also personally felt vindicated in seeing Rose getting Susie/her goons to help her with the matchmakers mafia, it was hilarious and I am absolutely loving how enmeshed Susie is getting with the Weissmans (also her knowing about Zelda’s boyfriend was just absolutely chef’s kiss).

Also, I think we all pretty much saw it coming that Mei wouldn’t keep the baby and she would go on to become a doctor - idc if they meant for the storyline to go there or if it’s just because of Stephanie Hsu being ridiculously booked, but I am so happy they wrote it in and she’s happy and becoming a doctor (more on this later).

Oh yeah and I almost forgot, Gordon Ford is a dick and we’ve been saying it. Nice

Midge And Susie

This is……. Painful.

I almost cried when Midge apologized to Susie, and also later when she talked to Alfie about how great Susie is. For them to reconnect and make peace is the main thing I wanted out of this season, and their dynamic in the present is so nice and it’s amazing to see, I had missed seeing them being friends and I am so heartwarmed to see it happening.

But…………….. I honestly don’t even WANT to acknowledge the flash forward and that they are not friends, let alone client and manager, anymore. It’s just too painful, the story has been about Midge and Susie as much as it’s been about Midge and comedy, and I’m really, really sad. Again, I just hope the future timeline continues on and we get a resolution between them as well.

Midge

Midge in the present: amazing beautiful I am giving her a hug and cheering for her

Midge in the future: I am holding my judgment until I find out exactly what is going on. I don’t think they would butcher her character like that without a valid reason, I am hoping it all will make sense in a sort of poetic justice way. (Although I will say that her outfits are still bomb, good for her)

The Families

If there is one thing I will never get tired of, it’s Moishe and Shirley’s antics. The thanksgiving meal was a delight (Abe, I love you) and the two of them at the Button Club were everything I didn’t know I needed. And their reconciliation was so sweet to see.

Speaking of sweet… I just about melted when Abe and Rose went out to dinner and she opened up to him (also they were wearing matching outfits and I just. CANT TAKE IT 😭). I really hope nothing happens to them as a couple because they are just too precious.

Also NOAH AND ASTRID my beloved 💕💕💕💕 I was so happy to see them again and if they’re in every upcoming episode they will not be onscreen enough.

Midge and Lenny

Yeah I kept this for last because I just cannot handle the absolute hurt of that scene. I am in shambles still.

Just - the absolute vulnerability between them, the soft fucking way they spoke to each other, the mutual acknowledgement… it was heartbreaking to see them go their separate ways (temporarily, I hope), and yet there was just SO MUCH LOVE between them, so much tenderness despite it all. And Midge’s callback to him being a man with a lease was so good because there was no flirting anymore, just fondness and so much emotion. That “what is grief if not love persevering” quote was made for that moment, their scene together was just so beautiful and sad at the same time. I needed it to last at least twenty minutes longer.

Final conclusions and other thoughts

Yeah, this season so far has a very different tone from the previous - I think we got a hint of how sad the writers could go with Moishe’s medical emergency last season, and I think we can expect more of that intensity going forward. I appreciate the shit to a more dry, cutting type of humor and more serious topics from a writing perspective, and I think they’re doing it well, but I’m not sure how much I’m enjoying it in the context of the show and of what I wanted to see. I didn’t think they would go the abortion route with Mei’s baby, and I especially didn’t think they would write it off so quickly; it makes me worry about what else they will write off quickly.

Also, I need Imogene. Why do we have no Imogene. A disgrace I tell you.

These were my thoughts for now but there will most likely be more coming, and I cannot wait for the next episode

When his eyes open, they’re glassy and confused, and he stares up at her tiredly. “What...what happened?”

Midge settles next to him on the bed, gently pulling his hand into her lap. She takes a deep breath and explains. How she stopped by after dropping off the kids with Joel. That she found him on the bathroom floor and called an ambulance.

Lenny averts his gaze as she talks, too ashamed to look at her. “I threw out your stash,” she tells him when she’s done. “Your apartment - I’m sorry. It’s a mess, but I didn’t know what else to do when they kicked me out after visiting hours last night - ”

“You shouldn’t be here, Midge,” he whispers. “I’m...I’m hurting you too much, and you deserve better.”

She blinks at him. “If I leave, what happens?” She asks. “You go find your dealer and keep pumping yourself full of drugs?”

He still won’t meet her gaze, and she reaches for his face, gently cupping his cheek and turning him to look at her. “Lenny...do you love me?” She asks. “Because I love you. So much. And I’m not going to walk away and let you kill yourself. Let me help you,” she pleads.

“Midge - ”

"I’m sorry I didn’t say something sooner,” she interrupts. “Maybe if I had - ”

“I would’ve denied it. Just like I did the first time. I would have said that everything was fine.” Midge nods slowly. “I do love you, Midge,” he adds. “I love you more than I ever thought I could love anyone. But I - ”

She interrupts him by closing the distance between them, kissing him slowly but a little desperately. His free hand timidly finds her waist, and he kisses her back. “Then let me be there for you,” she whispers as she breaks the kiss, resting her forehead against his. “Because if you don’t, you will break my fucking heart.”

He doesn’t answer for a long moment. And then she feels him nod gently. “Okay,” he whispers.

Her tears finally break loose, and he pulls her against him, tucking her into the crook of his arm and holding her tightly as she clings to him.
